Gonzaga climbs to No.1 in AP Poll

The Gonzaga Bulldogs moved into the No. 1 spot in the AP poll on Monday. The Bulldogs sit at 22-0 and are the last undefeated team in Division I Men’s Basketball. Gonzaga is also number one in the Coaches’ Poll.

Gonzaga previously sat at number three, but a crazy week that saw seven of the top ten and a total of 14 top 25 teams lose, including former No. 1 Villanova and former No. 2 Kansas, helped catapult the Bulldogs to number one. This is second time in school history and the first time since 2013 the Bulldogs have reached the number one spot.

The team has rolled through conference play including a win against #19 St. Mary’s and beat some quality opponents out of conference, including #5 Arizona, #23 Florida, Akron, Iowa State and Tennessee.

The Bulldogs received 46 first place votes, with #2 Baylor receiving six, #3 Kansas nine and#4 Villanova with four. Arizona, Louisville, West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Wisconsin round out the top 10.

The Mark Few led team is averaging 85.2 points per game, good enough for 13th in the country. The team is lead offensively by Junior guard Nigel Williams-Goss who is averaging 14.8 points per game and Senior center Przemek Karnowski who is averaging 12.5 points per game. The seven-foot-one Karnowksi is key in the Bulldogs offense, averaging 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. On the other side of the ball, the Bulldogs are allowing an average of 61.4 points per game, ninth best in the nation. Goss averages 1.6 steals per game, while freshman forward Zach Collins is averaging 1.4 blocks per game.

Gonzaga is the fifth team to be ranked number one in the AP poll this year, joining Duke, Baylor, Villanova and Kentucky. They’re the sixth team to reach that spot in the Coaches Poll. Though Gonzaga has never reached the Final Four, the team has reached the NCAA tournament in 18 straight seasons. The Bulldogs have eight games remaining in the regular season and will be favored to win all of them. As long as the team doesn’t experience an upset in the conference tournament, the Bulldogs could enter Selection Sunday as the undefeated, number one team in the country.
