Tom Brady leads Patriots to Victory in Super Bowl LI
Seven Super Bowl appearances. Five Super Bowl victories. Four Super Bowl MVPs. Two League MVPs. 12-time Pro Bowler. There isn’t a debate anymore; Tom Brady is greatest quarterback of all time.
The Atlanta Falcons dominated the first half of Super Bowl LI, leading 21-3 at halftime. Matt Ryan and the offense were clicking while the Atlanta defense was keeping the Patriots out of the end zone. In fact, it was the Falcons’ defense that ended up in the end zone after intercepting a Tom Brady pass and returning it 82 yards for a touchdown. The Falcons were on their way to the franchise’s first Super Bowl title.
Atlanta would score again in the third quarter, extending their lead to 28-3. That’s when Tom Brady began to orchestrate the largest comeback in the history of the Super Bowl. The Patriots’ offensive line gave Brady plenty of time and protection, his receivers made catches and gained yards after the catch and his coach was calm during the storm. The Patriots would score 31 unanswered points, including 19 in the 4th quarter, on their way to a 34-28 overtime win. It’s the franchises’ fifth Super Bowl victory.
Brady set several Super Bowl records in Super Bowl LI, including most completions in a games (43), completions in a career (207), most yards in a game (466), most yards in a career (2071), most touchdowns in a career (15) and most appearances by a player (7). He is the first five-time winner of the Super Bowl.
In his 16 seasons as the Patriots starter, the team has never had a losing season. The Patriots have won 14 division titles, have made the AFC Championship game 11 times and have gone on to the Super Bowl seven times.
Brady was drafted in the 6th round, 199th overall in 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. The San Mateo, California native played football at the University of Michigan, where he helped lead the Wolverines to victory in the 1999 Citrus Bowl and the 2000 Orange Bowl. Brady served as the backup quarterback for the 1997 National Champion Michigan team.
At 39, Tom Brady has given no indication that he is considering retirement. Continuing his career will separate him further from the rest of the pack and cement his legacy as the greatest quarterback, and perhaps player, of all time.
